by Claudine Kurp The Getaway It has been a hectic summer with a busy 9-year-old and an active toddler. With my husband’s work schedule and a young child that seems to be allergic to travel, I threw my hands up at the idea of an extended vacation. Still, this was my 10-year wedding anniversary and I wanted to do something special for this milestone occasion.
When I secured a sitter for an overnight trip, I started looking into local options for a quick getaway. I considered Annapolis, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and the beautiful Virginia countryside. Through some friends, I discovered a gorgeous destination, Salamander Resort and Spa in Middleburg, VA. After doing some research on the resort, I was a little surprised that this jewel wasn’t more widely known. With my due diligence complete on hotel options, I booked a room and planned for a dreamy, albeit quick, visit to Salamander Resort and Spa in Middleburg, Virginia.

by Micaela Williamson We were honored to be featured as a great family resource by Laura Evans on Fox 5 Washington DC. Watch the clip. Our favorite part was when she mentioned our book is a great gift for baby showers, grandparents, and new families.
Dear Friends,
As you probably already know, last year DC Metro Mom joined award-winning blogger Super NOVA Mommy, Micaela Williamson, in creating a new guidebook for local parents, Kid Trips Northern Virginia. We are so proud of the success of the book and of its companion website, GoKidTrips.com, and have enjoyed every minute of the book signings, media interviews, and events. by Claudine Are you looking to remove unwanted facial or body hair? Consider laser hair removal. I personally started doing laser on my bikini area two years ago. When you commit to the process, you have to attend appointments typically every 6 to 8 weeks. I saw results within 3 treatments. Most people need to have at least 6 appointments to see full results. While I considered the process painful (no one else seems to), an ice pack became my best friend. After my first appointment I learned a lesson. I started driving to my appointments with an ice pack on me (yes in my car). By the time I got to the spa, I truly felt very little pain during the procedure. Now mind you, I am a big wimp so ice was a must for me. If you are interested laser hair removal, I would recommend starting the process as soon as possible. You will be well on your way by the summer! As you may know from my previous articles, I am a huge fan of Lifetime Fitness LifeSpa in Loudoun County (Did I mention the free childcare?), however, there are obviously a host of local medi-spas to choose from in the DC Metro area. When selecting a medi-spa, I would caution you to make sure that you are working with a reputable spa and get a full consultation in person or over the phone to find out EXACTLY what you need to do in advance of the appointment. For more information about laser treatments, please see the attached from Lifetime Fitness LifeSpa below. BONUS: See some of the Lifetime Fitness Spa specials listed below!
by Claudine and MicaelaThere is nothing like a January snowfall to remind us that winter is far from over! And while the charm of the snow can be enchanting, the reality is the cold weather can catch up with the young and old alike and make for a less than comfortable family-friendly day. After you have built your snowman, spent hours sledding and have thrown a few snowballs, it might be time to find some more climate friendly activities for your crew.
And we have tons of options for you! To start, the Kid Trips Northern Virginia book lists many local museums and hidden gems in Northern Virginia as well as Washington DC. Check out some of our Top Ideas to Discover Winter Fun in DC and Beyond below: Dear Friends, Thank you for making the first year of Kid Trips Northern Virginia such an amazing success! After the long awaited publishing of our book in February, we have been overwhelmed by the kind reader comments, local support, and media interest. We have been thrilled to be featured on News Channel 8, Washington Family Magazine, The Huffington Post, Elizabeth Street, Wired Momma, The Connection Newspapers, Prince William Living Magazine, WTOP, and other great media outlets. We have also been grateful for the continued support of our local sponsors and for the opportunities to contribute to the family-friendly content of Washington Family Magazine and Northern Virginia Magazine. Throughout 2013 our blog and social media pages have been a-buzz with seasonal events, suggestions for local family fun, and special giveaways. Northern Virginia is truly a wonderfully dynamic and vibrant place to raise a family. But with all the exciting new growth in the area, by years end we were convinced we had to update the book. Moving into 2014, we are happy to report that an updated version with even more new venues, events, and "Top Picks" is now available on Amazon and in local stores. We are honored to be a part of this local community and are grateful that our community of readers and supporters is continuing to grow. In 2014, look for more big announcements, not-to miss giveaways, and interesting articles. Thank you to our sponsors, booksellers, and readers for following our journey. We wish you and your family a very happy and healthy 2014! Sincerely, Claudine, Amy, and MicaelaKid Trips LLC
With the arrival of Hanukkah during Thanksgiving week, the holiday rush of 2013 is coming up quickly. Our favorite children's stores in Northern Virginia have some unique items to make gift giving fun and easy, all while supporting the local economy. For BabiesErgobaby Swaddler: This product takes swaddling to a whole new level! Not only is it super easy to use, but the unique leg pouch allows for quick access to diaper changing without having to undo the whole swaddle. Comes in two sizes. Where to buy in NoVA: Baby Blossom (locations in Reston & Fairfax) by Claudine Halloween is always such a fun time of the year. As a child I counted the days until October 31st. Halloween always promised a night of fun with friends that included an amazing costume (at least I thought so) and loads of candy. What more could a child want? My enthusiasm for Halloween waned as I grew older. In my post college years there were a handful of parties, but they always seemed to annoy me. Dressing up wasn't fun anymore. Going to a costume party in my twenties seemed more like work. Pass me a drink already...do I seriously need to be a cat for yet another year! Where are the whiskers, tail, leggings and black turtleneck? But...times change. This is always one of my favorite times of the year. You can have a manicure and pedicure for $50.00 or a facial for $50.00. How about a much needed massage?
Peruse the Spa Week link and find a location near you. I typically try to book close to home or at Lifetime Fitness where you can get free childcare during your visit to the LifeSpa. Enjoy!
